City of Airdrie - Twinning Program

"The Sisterhood Agreement between Gwacheon and Airdrie has enriched our diverse communities with ongoing friendship and understanding."

The City of Airdrie has been with twinned with Gwacheon, Korea since 1997.  The Twinning program started with the intent to provide opportunities for Airdrie residents to share cultural experiences, develop friendships and explore economic opportunities for local businesses.

The goal of the Twinning Program is to broaden our understanding and appreciation for each other's respective cultures.  Each summer, Gwacheon students visit Airdrie to understand cultures, build friendships and learn English.  The visits from the Gwacheon Officials and students heighten the understanding and appreciation for our respective cultures.

Gwacheon Park Airdrie, Alberta

Gwacheon Park was officially established on July 2003. The location for Gwacheon Park was selected because of the great visibility and prominence within the heart of Airdrie.  Gwacheon Park has a place of honour and will be visited and enjoyed by thousands of people. As our relationship grows and flourishes, so will Gwacheon Park.

The stone anchoring the Korean arch and holding the plaque are made of sandstone, which is the foundation of our city and symbolizes the strength and endurance of our Sisterhood. The butterfly symbol of the City of Gwacheon was used for the central flowerbeds, the flag poles and the sitting area.  The Sisterhood agreement has greatly enriched the communities of Gwacheon and Airdrie with continued friendship and understanding between our diverse cultures.

Roses have been planted to represent the provincial flower of Alberta, the Wild Rose, and the Mugunghwa, the national flower of Korea.

Annual wheat plantings frame the flowerbed in waves of gold. Wheat is an important crop of our agricultural base, the mainstay of our daily food and proudly portrayed on our city crest. The City of Airdrie offers the City of Gwacheon a gift of wheat, representing our ongoing wishes for bountiful harvests, a prosperous economy and good health.

The Sisterhood Agreement has greatly enriched the communities of Gwacheon and Airdrie with continued friendship and understanding between our diverse cultures.

It is with great pride that on July 31, 2003, the City of Airdrie opened and dedicated Gwacheon Park to all citizens of the City of Gwacheon.
